Tor Browser Setup That Actually Holds Up

Most people install Tor Browser and leave it at the defaults, which is fine for reading and a little loose for buying. The setup that holds up has three parts: install from source or verify the signature, set the security level, and keep the browser updated. Each one removes a specific failure mode.

The security level is the one people fiddle with. Set to Safest, it turns off scripts and a lot of the pages that depend on them stop working, which is the price of the protection. The right habit is to leave it high and only lower it for a specific page that you have already verified, then raise it back. Lowering it by default is how a page that needs JavaScript gets to run it.
